Juneberries

Amelanchier spp. — also known as serviceberry, juneberry and saskatoonberry.

Native plant with forms ranging from short shrub to single- and multi-stemmed small tree. Flowers in early spring with fruit ripening in June. Commonly planted for its Spring bloom and Autumn color ornamental value. Birds and humans tend to like its sweet, red to dark purple blueberry-looking fruit.

The fruit is good eaten out of hand as well as cooked.

Juneberries can be found in many parts of the city, particularly in landscaping plantings at commercial and residential locations.
